Healthy Zaatar Popcorn Recipe

zaatar popcorn

POPCORN! It makes me so happy. It’s crunchy, salty, warm…and low in calories! First, before I get into it, I need to make this PSA. Please DO NOT make microwaved popcorn ever again. It is so so soooo unhealthy, and I am not talking about the calories here, it’s the chemical used in the bag it is popped in.

The bags are coated with PFOA. It is that shiny coating inside to prevent the grease from getting out (side note it is on other products like pizza boxes too), and it causes everything from infertility to at handful types of cancer. I wish I was joking, because when I first heard that, I thought, how can something as friendly as popcorn be so deadly. Unfortunately, it’s very very true. Google it and gawk at the horrors of microwave popcorn bags.

Ok, sorry for the downer, but you needed to know! Back to happy thoughts, crispy popcorn, salt, and in this case, zaatar!

I make popcorn the old fashioned way. In a pot, on the stove top. It is very easy, and if you have kids they tend to love the process. The best part is adding any seasonings you want as soon as it popped. Zaatar, sumac, chocolate chips, powdered ranch, the possibilities are endless..

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup popcorn
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • 2 tbsp zaatar
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a thick-bottomed pot. Place a couple kernels in there.

  2. When the kernels pop, that means the oil is at the right temperature. Put the rest of the kernels in the pot and cover with a lid.

  3. Keep shaking the pot over the heat as the kernels continue to pop.

  4. When the popping stops immediately remove the pot from the heat.

  5. Take the salt & zaatar, sprinkle over the popcorn in the pot. Cover with the lid and shake well to cover all the popcorn. Add more as needed to taste.
